COPIES & REMAKES

Project:

Investigate things that have been copied or re-made (e.g. songs, films, artwork, furniture etc) and create your own copy/remake of something of your choice.

Outcome:

For this brief, I based my work around the idea of ‘a copy of copy’. I would draw an image on paper and have someone else attempt to make an exact replica of my illustration. Another person would then copy the previous person’s drawing. Following this system, I collected a chain of 19 copies from one original.

The chain of drawings was equivalent to a visual form of ‘Chinese Whispers’. I explored people’s interpretation of an exact copy and their attention to detail. Each copy became an original in its own right since none of the drawings were exact replicas.

I created two controlled scenarios for this experiment. One involved 1 type of pen and 1 consistent size of paper, the other included 6 different pens and 1 consistent size of paper. The first exaple showed a greater similarity in drawings whereas the second had very dramatic changes as the different pen sizes affected people‘s attention to detail.
